Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that Maduro had been apprehended.
One account, which registered on the site last month and made four bets, all on Venezuela, made more than $436K from a initial bet of $32.5K.
It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Probability Spikes Before Public Statement
Market statistics shows that users put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.
But these probabilities had jumped to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity immediately prior to the official statement was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said an industry expert.
A handful of other individuals also earned significant sums from predicting the capture.
Political Attention Emerges
Politicians are starting to take note.
Proposed legislation put forward on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.
The Prediction Market Landscape

The industry were examined under the previous administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.
